Hubby and I were watching that show last night, too. I’m
white and he’s black, and so we’ve talked many times about how he’s
treated differently in society. But I got a little frustrated about
the show and I yelled, It ain’t just black people that get treated
like that–it’s Asians, Hispanics, Fat People… They’ve done that to
me!
And he looked at me sadly, and said, I know…
I said, What are you talking about?
and he replied, All those times that you came home and said that some
salesperson treated you badly, I just couldn’t tell you that it was
probably because of your weight, but I know people do discriminate
against fat people.
(My weight used to be off-limits for conversation, but now that I’ve
lost close to 100 pounds and feel more comfortable with myself, we can
both freely talk about it, like it was some other entity entirely, you
know?)
That’s why I loved the way the last Seinfeld turned out–I was
screaming, THAT’S WHAT YOU GET!!! LOL
But Dateline or 48 Hours or Primetime Live (one of those news
magazines) did do a story in which they dressed up skinny people to
look fat and demonstrated how differently (read–POORLY) they were
treated as opposed to when they were just looking skinny. No big
secret there….
