I received California state disability for 6 weeks after my surgery date.
The doctor had the forms in his office and had no qualms about assigning
that much time. After 6 weeks I could probably go back to any sort of work
short of cleaning elephant pens.
The maximum amount you can receive is around $360 a week and they deduct ANY
pay you receive during this time. If you are taking any sick leave or
vacation time for your surgery get the check up front (if you can) and DO
NOT have it issued during your disability period (better to get it when you
return to work).
